Jacob (Jake) Barnett "Math and Science Prodigy" on 60 Minutes
I just read an article over at The Libertarian Republic about Jake Barnett. He was put in "special education" because he didn't learn like the rest of the children in his class. A doctor basically told his parents that he'd never learn to tie his shoes and that he had ADD. He was also diagnosed with autism. His parents didn't settle for that. They saw that he was regressing in special ed and took him out.
He dropped out of school in the 5th grade, memorized high school math in two weeks, and is now taking on Einsteins' Theory of Relativity. He's fascinated with physics. Now Jake is 14 and is in college. Yes. You read that right. He has a full scholarship at Purdue and is an honor student.
Watch the video. He is articulate and passionate. His parents didn't settle and chose to cultivate his interests and his genius. He skyrocketed. Folks, we don't all have geniuses living under our roofs, but I think this is proof that we should never give up on our children. They are eager to learn. Perhaps we just need to help them find that thing they're passionate about, cultivate their interests, and see where they go! You might be amazed!
